Companies, and \ncountries, that manage what they know will outperform those that don\u2019t \u2013\n the recognition that we are in a Knowledge Economy has been gaining \nground for some years now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>30 or 40 years ago, it was estimated that 80% of the value of large \norganisations lay within tangible assets such as buildings, machinery \nand other equipment \u2013 only 20% was thought to be from intangibles, \nnotably knowledge. Today this situation is reversed; this means that \nneglecting to manage an organisation\u2019s knowledge asset means that up to \n80% of the total value is being neglected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fine, but how do we do this? What does it mean to manage the \nknowledge asset of an organisation? It\u2019s intangible\u2026and this is \ndiscouraging for some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After having been in Knowledge Management for 19 years and as Head of\n KM implementing the approach for three organisations in three different\n sectors (and learning a great deal along the way), there seems to me to\n be 5 key points to encompass delivery in a sustainable way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A clear KM vision that is compelling and genuinely excites people when you communicate it to them;<\/li><li>Structured, simple, pragmatic (and well regarded) KM Plans for Functions, Projects &amp; Individuals;<\/li><li>Effective team and individual learning processes that staff find worth attending and see make a difference;<\/li><li>Powerful communities that are effective and bring innovation;<\/li><li>Getting across the distinction between Strategic &amp; Tactical \nKM&nbsp;and, critically, really good, enticing and inspiring communications.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These points help to take people from management to leadership which \nlifts energy, participation and fulfilment for staff \u2013 it helps KM to \nappeal to hearts as well as minds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do we deliver Knowledge Management in way that organisations find compelling and achievable?
