Supported by Philip Rycroft (Head of UK \nGovernance Group, Cabinet Office), the Knowledge Principles make a \ndistinction between Knowledge and Information and complement the \nexisting Information Principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Having been working in KM for almost 20 years, it\u2019s become so clearly\n important to treat what we know as an organisational asset and then \nmanage it accordingly. Taking this foundational perspective starts to \nunlock & enable the other principles included in the set including \naround environment & culture, and planning for knowledge sharing and\n learning for both organisations and individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s crucial that a holistic and integrated approach to Knowledge \nManagement (KM) is taken; the new Knowledge Principles make this point \nclear. I have encountered outlooks that view KM as being mainly or \nwholly about knowledge capture or communities or individual knowledge \ntransfer. All these things, and more, are needed for a true and \ncomprehensive approach to managing an organisation\u2019s knowledge asset. \nMore than once over the years I have been asked what\u2019s my favourite part\n of KM, or which part I would miss the most if it wasn\u2019t there. The \ntruth is, it\u2019s all important \u2013 it\u2019s this holistic view point that \ncreates a strategic approach, and if it\u2019s well implemented, delivers an \norganisation that is properly managing what it knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In many ways, KM itself is not that complex \u2013 almost anyone can see \nthe value in applying it. The harder challenge comes from implementing \nit within an organisation, largely due to the cultural implications.
