{"id":98,"date":"2016-08-10T00:11:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-09T23:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/i3works.bluetree.uk\/news\/?p=98"},"modified":"2019-12-08T21:44:07","modified_gmt":"2019-12-08T21:44:07","slug":"what-does-iso-90012015-offer-knowledge-managers-and-organisations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/2016\/08\/what-does-iso-90012015-offer-knowledge-managers-and-organisations\/","title":{"rendered":"What does ISO 9001:2015 offer knowledge managers and organisations?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The good news is knowledge managers now have another tool in their toolkit to help gain senior understanding and support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>So what is this new tool and what does it mean for Knowledge Management?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Author: Emma Dufty Senior Knowledge Manager at i3Works<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting buy-in for KM from top management can still be difficult even\n though knowledge assets can make up to potentially 80% of a company\u2019s \ntotal value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what is this new tool and what does it mean for Knowledge Management?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer is <em>ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems<\/em> or to be more precise <em>Clause 7.1.6 Knowledge<\/em>.&nbsp;\n As you may be aware ISO 9001:2015 is the world\u2019s leading quality \nmanagement standard, with over 1.1 million certificates issued \nworldwide.&nbsp; It\u2019s reviewed every five years in order to keep it current \nand relevant for the marketplace and for the first time the standard \nexplicitly mentions knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some might argue that it is only a clause within a quality standard \nrather than a standalone KM standard itself, whereas others say the new \nclause is too high level in its requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However I believe by adding knowledge to an established recognised \nquality standard means knowledge is now seen as a requirement and not an\n optional extra for organisations.&nbsp; It raises the awareness of the \nmanagement of knowledge to senior management but by not being too \nprescriptive it doesn\u2019t weigh KM down into bureaucratic information or \ndocument management.&nbsp; It allows organisations the freedom to define \ntheir own needs within the simple guidance that organisation\u2019s need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Safeguard themselves from knowledge loss, and<\/li><li>Encourage them to acquire knowledge through learning from experience, mentoring and benchmarking.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For Knowledge Managers it now moves KM from the \u201cnice to have\u201d to an \n\u201cessential\u201d for any organisation looking to retain or apply for ISO \n2001:2015.&nbsp;This means that sufficient attention must be paid to managing\n knowledge to ensure good and consistent quality of services and goods.&nbsp;\n So it is imperative that the quality team and senior management \nunderstand the implications and value the importance of KM to the \norganisation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary, KM has attained the same status as other professional \ndisciplines within today\u2019s organisations and, as such, needs the same \nlevel of support, leadership and governance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The good news is knowledge managers now have another tool in their toolkit to help gain senior understanding and support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":156,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-98","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-articles"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/98"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=98"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/98\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":201,"href":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/98\/revisions\/201"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/156"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=98"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=98"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.i3works.co.uk\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=98"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
