Release Train Engineer

  • Location: Andover (initially) and remotely
  • Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
  • Salary:  Competitive, dependant upon experience

We are looking for an experienced release train engineer (RTE) able to instil Agile best practice into the team delivery while taking responsibility for the planning and cohesion of the programme or delivery area’s body of work.

The ideal candidate will have demonstratable experience of:

  • Working in the Defence sector
  • Applying Scrum/Kanban frameworks within multi-skilled development teams
  • Facilitation of PI planning and readiness in accordance with the PI plan
  • Creation of and communication of the annual calendars for iterations and programme increments
  • Facilitating relationships between their teams and other departments.
  • Summarising the PI objectives and publish them to provide visibility and transparency.
  • Monitoring and reporting on the success of the release train.
  • Facilitation of Iteration and Increment demos.
  • communicating and collaborating with product and solution management, product owners and other stakeholders to align programme increment (PI) strategy and execution.
  • Managing the scrum of scrums to ensure alignment of teams
  • Nurturing communities of practice
  • Teaching Agile teams, leaders and scrum masters about the combination of Agile and SAFe management practices and ideologies.
  • Creation of retrospective improvement roadmaps by analysing all activities and actions that have previously been performed and finding ways to improve each process.
  • Providing guidance and management to all team members to ensure goals are met.

Core skills:

  • Minimum of SC clearance
  • A thorough understanding and hands-on experience of working with SAFe and Agile frameworks.
  • An understanding of which metrics are beneficial and should be tracked, how these metrics should be interpreted.
  • Possess very strong communication, negotiation and critical thinking skills, the desire to be a lifelong learner.
  • Construct an environment that fosters mutual influence and trust
  • Open, honest, integrity and clarity of communication.
  • Strong presentation skills, a facilitator of conversation as well as a supportive and influential teacher and mentor.


Awareness of the following technical areas:

  • DevOps practice of continuous integration, delivery and deployment, peer programming, lean practice
  • Development technologies such as Java, Go, Python and Node JS
  • SQL Server, SSRS/Power BI, EF Core and applicable ORMs and the CheckMarx security console
  • PL/SQL, Oracle Database 11g/12c, BI Publisher and WebLogic server, Oracle RESTful Data Services (ORDS), ApexSec Security Console
  • Automated unit testing using tools and frameworks including utPLSQL version 3, SQL Developer, MSTest, NUnit and XUnit
  • Using Test Driven Development (TDD) and Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) using tools such as Selenium Javascript, Mocha, Chai and Cypress
  • Building and management of applications using container technologies in the form of Docker and/or Kubernetes
  • Integrating systems via APIs, including on-premise and other cloud-based services, including Azure and Amazon AWS
  • Building secure web applications that collect/manage personal and/or sensitive information with appropriate controls and protection in-line with MoD JSP440 or similar regulations from other sectors
  • Developing RESTful web services across different technologies and securing those services via OAuth2
  • Using Static Code scanning tools to diagnose security issues within applications
  • Windows 2012 R2/2016, 2019, Red Hat Linux 6.x and 7.x operating systems
