A little over a year ago, I was undertaking intelligence modules as part of my International Relations degree and writing my dissertation on how the UK could effectively defend itself against the threat posed by Russia. Today, I’m part of a team helping to deliver mission-critical programmes for the UK defence sector. The transition has been fast, exciting, and deeply rewarding – and it’s all thanks to i3Works’ Fast Track Consultant (FTC) graduate programme.
As a management consultancy, i3Works delivers high-impact solutions across public and private sectors, but what truly sets the company apart is its people. From my first day, I’ve worked alongside colleagues who are not only experts in their fields but genuinely passionate about making a difference. Professionalism and performance are fundamental here, but it’s the company’s focus to nurture innovative individuals, create inspirational ideas, and make an immediate impact is what truly sets i3Works apart and creates an environment where you can grow.

I joined the FTC programme because I wanted to challenge myself and apply my academic background in a practical setting. My degree in Politics and International Relations gave me a strong understanding of how critical the Ministry of Defence is in safeguarding the UK, as well as insight into the broader political spectrum, stakeholder landscapes, and global affairs. What I lacked was hands-on experience in real-world programme delivery, but that gap closed quickly. At i3Works, learning happens at pace. The programme throws you into real client environments early, supported by mentoring, structured training, and a strong peer network.
I currently work on a UK defence contract that spans the full scope of programme management, contributing to the successful delivery of complex and high-impact capabilities. Our work drives the successful integration of complex programmes that are vital to maintaining the UK’s defence posture and national security. The work is strategic, structured, and high stakes. The work I do now closely aligns with the focus of my dissertation, which examined whether the UK is effectively defending itself, and it has given me insight into the real-world applications of strategic defence and security.

The relevance of my academic background continues to surprise me. Understanding the broader geopolitical context gives me an added layer of insight when navigating defence priorities. Equally, my ability to communicate clearly, analyse policy implications, and engage stakeholders has translated seamlessly into the consultancy environment. i3Works recognises and values these transferable skills, and it’s been empowering to see them in action on real projects.
Beyond the technical delivery, one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey so far has been the support and development I’ve received from the i3Works team. Whether it’s informal coaching over coffee or formal and regular one-to-one sessions, there’s a strong culture of shared growth. My confidence has grown enormously, as has my ability to lead conversations, drive progress, and contribute value in complex settings.
i3Works is more than a consultancy. It’s a community of people who care about their clients, their work, and each other. If you’re a graduate or even an experienced professional wondering how your degree or skills fits into the world of consultancy – especially if you come from a non-technical background like mine – I can confidently say: there is a place for you here. And if you are driven by purpose, challenge, and the chance to contribute to something bigger, then defence is an incredibly rewarding sector to explore.
I’m proud to be part of i3Works, and excited for what’s next.
